Marcet (born Jane Haldimand in 1769) was the eldest child of a London-based Swiss financier and an English mother, and was educated mainly at home by private tutors. Born Jane Haldimand in 1769, Jane Marcet was the “only surviving daughter to the Swiss merchant and banker Anthony Francis Haldimand.” Her brother William would also become a merchant banker and eventually the director of the Bank of England.

In 1799, Jane Haldimand married Alexander Marcet, a Swiss-born physician. He was apparently quite supportive of his wife’s interest in science: after he became a lecturer of chemistry at Guy’s Hospital in London, the couple performed home chemistry experiments and discussed the principles of science.
